Charyn Canyon — this is a picturesque canyon on the Sharyn River in Kazakhstan (about 200 km east of Almaty, near the border with China). Its length is about 90 km. The canyon is part of the Charyn National Park, established on February 23, 2004.
Over millions of years, wind and water have carved amazing shapes and shadows into the red sandstone, creating fantastic rock formations of various sizes and shapes. Although Charyn is significantly smaller than the Grand Canyon in the United States, many consider it no less impressive.
In addition to excursions and photography, you can go hiking, rafting, off-road jeep tours or just enjoy the stunning nature.
The climate of the Kazakh steppe is harsh: in winter, the temperature in the canyon drops to -30 °C, and in summer it rises to +40 °C.
